Robert Brignall gained his early training as a chorister at Old St Paul's Church, Edinburgh, and then as a choral scholar in Christ's College, Cambridge. He has studied bass-baritone under Eric von Ibler, James Ottaway, Ghislaine Morgan, and Alan Watt.
From 2008-2010 Robert was a Lay Clerk at Bristol Cathedral. Since moving away from Bristol, Robert has appeared with numerous groups, most recently Belsize Baroque, OSJ Voices, the Erebus Ensemble, the Epiphoni Consort and Opera Vera. Previously, he has sung with groups including the Choir of London, Exultate Singers, Edinburgh Camerata and Edinburgh Symphony Baroque.
Robert has given song recitals in Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh and St Andrews. Previous appearances as a concert soloist have included Fauré Requiem, Puccini Messa di Gloria, Stainer Crucifixion, Haydn Missa Cellensis, Handel Messiah, Handel Saul (Saul), Bach St John Passion (Christus), Bach B Minor Mass, Purcell History of Dioclesian (Bacchus), Monteverdi Vespers and Buxtehude Membra Jesu Nostri. On stage he has appeared in Handel Xerxes (Ariodates) in Edinburgh, and in several Gilbert and Sullivan productions in St Andrews, including The Gondoliers (as the Duke of Plaza-Toro) and Patience (as Colonel Calverly).
The following non-exhaustive list details works where I have appeared as a soloist. These are in addition to other smaller roles, particularly those from the Anglican choral tradition.
