Katie Chicot

Public Talks

I have given talks for the Royal Institution, Maths Inspiration, Maths in Action and in many individual schools. If you would like me to give a talk for your organisation then please e-mail me at k.m.chicot at open.ac.uk.

Titles and abstracts of talks include:

"To Infinity and Beyond "

The infinitely large and the infinitely small are mind-blowing concepts that have helped mathematicians to solve some very real, and finite, problems. Katie Chicot explores the mysteries and mis-conceptions of infinity, from ancient puzzles to some of the very latest mathematical research, taking you to infinity…and beyond.

"Big Ideas"

Be prepared to let your mind expand as we look at some of the terrifying consequences of Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Time, space and reality are not what you think. To see how the universe really works we will have to ride light beams and follow in the footsteps of the greatest thinker of our time.

"Your country needs you"

A whistle stop tour of the history of code breaking. Students make and break codes and see how mathematics underpins all aspects of the coding arms race.

"Winning arguments and busting myths"

Wherever you look, from government publications to newspapers and even the playground, you will find information that has been misrepresented. Sometimes it is deliberate ‘spin’, other times it is plain
ignorance. Katie will give you tips on how to see through the smoke and mirrors. Prepare to reason ruthlessly and win arguments.

"Compelling and Compulsive Mathematics"

A copy of the slides from the UKMT teachers' meeting 2011 is here. (NB. Full web addresses are given in most cases but the hyperlinks within the presentation won't work.)
